IT'S GREAT TO BE GRAND!

The month of September is home to a number of national holidays and observances, Labor Day and the anniversary of "9/11," just to mention a couple. One you may have overlooked is "Grandparents Day," typically observed on the second Sunday of September. Founded in 1970 as a local observance by housewife Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, of Oak Hill, W. Va., the day was proclaimed an official holiday by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. At the time, Carter said the holiday would recognize "the importance and worth of the 17 million grandparents in our nation." Today, as we approach its 32nd anniversary, there are more than 70 million grandparents in the United States.

Why a day to honor grandparents? In his original proclamation, Carter wrote that because grandparents "are usually free to love and guide and befriend the young without having to take daily responsibility for them, they can often reach out past pride and fear of failure and close the space between generations."

Today, in our church and around the country, many grandparents have actually assumed daily responsibility for their grandchildren. According to AARP, 4.5 million children are being raised in households headed by grandparents.

Why a day to honor grandparents? Grandparents create special relationships and pass on lessons that last a lifetime. As Carter wrote, "Grandparents are our continuing tie to the near-past, to the events and beliefs and experiences that so strongly affect our lives and the world around us."

If you're not a grandparent, I'm sorry; you don't know what you're missing!

Blessings upon you, grandparents for the blessing you are your family and church.

Find a grandparent and give them a big hug and a thank you.

work planning youth programs and activities to insure that our ministry to students does not lag.

Wednesday, September 28 has been designated as "See You at the Pole Day." Students across the country will gather at their school's flagpole before school begins to pray for each other and their schools. Our students will be challenged to participate in this significant witness to fellow students and the community. On Wednesday evening our students will join fellow students for a "Saw You at the Pole Rally," to be encouraged to continue to make a difference in life on their campus and to share their faith with other students. The rally site will be announced soon.

NEW ADULT DISCIPLESHIP STRATEGY CONTINUES IN SEPTEMBER

Beginning August 28, HBBC will inaugurate "Growing Deeper," a new discipleship hour where Holly Brook members can choose to participate in seminars which will stretch their faith and deepen their spiritual roots. Each week, members can choose one of three "tracks" of involvement. Our first two series include "Teach Us to Pray" and "Who's My Neighbor?" "Teach Us to Pray" led by Dr. Jim Wright, will remind us of how God responds to the prayers of his children and will teach us how to pray the heart and mind of God. "Who's My Neighbor?" will explore the beliefs and practices of several non-Christian groups in our community and discuss ways to build bridges to these groups in order to share Jesus. Seminars will focus on Mormons, Muslims, Jehovah's Witnesses and other people groups. Seminars will be led by Duane Wilt of B1 Ministries and Allen Huesing, Director of International Education at ETBU.

The third track, offered each week, will focus on outreach into the community, providing a weekly opportunity to visit/call new comers, visitors or absentees.

At the same time adults are participating in seminars, students will enjoy their own program of discipleship and ministry.

There's a place for children, too. Special programming is being prepared for children age 5 through sixth grade. Childcare for younger children is always available during HBBC programs.

The "Growing Deeper" program will be offered from 6:00-7:00 p.m. each week through November 6. At that time the continuation of the program will be evaluated.

NEW CHILDREN'S "HIS WORD SINGERS" GIVES CHILDREN, PARENTS SUNDAY NIGHT OPTION

Parents who want to participate in Sunday evening discipleship seminars now have an option for what to do with their kids. "His Word Singers" is an active, exciting new Sunday evening program for Children scheduled at 6:00 p.m., the same time as our student discipleship program and adult "Growing Deeper" seminars. "His Word Singers" features high energy yet worshipful music for kids, much like what they enjoy during Vacation Bible School except that all of the songs contain pure scripture set to music. "His Word Singers."

"His Word Singers" will be led by Dru Owens and a host of helpers.

SAINTS ALIVE RETURN SEPTEMBER 13

Our Saints Alive senior adult fellowship will return on Tuesday, September 13, with a new season of fun and fellowship. Table games and fellowship will begin at 10:00 a.m. Lunch will be enjoyed around 11:30 a.m.

Sixteen saints made trip to Palo Duro Canyon in July. God blessed with safe travel, reasonably pleasant weather and lots of fun. Thanks to John McKeever for the picture memories.

Fourteen saints are planning to attend the Fall Jubilee in Gatlinburg, TN, in September, making stops in Memphis, Nashville and Ashville, NC, en route.

A number of day trips are being considered for our Saints Alive group, the first being a trip to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas in October. A full schedule of meetings and outings will be presented at our September meeting.

H.O.P. UPDATE

Each Sunday during the month of August HBBC members have met during each morning worship service to pray for the service, its participants and leaders, and its impact on participants and our community. An interesting discovery that has been made is that this time of prayer is not only affecting the services but the hearts and lives of those who are praying! The pray-ers are becoming more sensitive to God's heart and seeing life more clearly through God's eyes. That can't be all bad!

You are invited to share in this important ministry. The H.O.P. (Hour of Power) prayer team meets in the reception area of the Student Ministry Office in the church office suite. Pray-ers select the days and times they wish to pray. For more info, contact Dr. Jim Wright.

HOLLY BROOK STITCHERS

Stitchers will meet on Tuesday, September 6 in the craft room at 9:00am. Each will bring the aprons that they have been making so they can be judged. Anyone is invited. The aprons can be made anyway you would like. Be creative. The aprons will be used for the Ladies Tea on Sept. 17. Questions? Call Pat Cude at 903-769-2607. Stitchers will also meet on Sept. 27. Come have fun with us.

MILITARY PRAYER SUPPORT MEETING

Please join us as we pray and support our community and Military families through the Word of God and power of prayer. This is a time of sharing, uplifting and praising.

We hear people say, "Pray for our Troops!" But what do we pray for? What, specifically, are their needs? Not able to join us, you can still pray for our military: 1. Pray for protection. "As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people both now and forevermore" (Psalm I25:2).

Next Meeting Date Sept. 11 @ 5 pm903 769 3080.

"ONE IN A MISSION" IS NEXT WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY

When approximately two million adult pilgrims of ancient Israel left behind their slavery in Egypt, wandering in the wilderness for an entire generation, only two made it safely to the Promised Land. That’s One in a Million who were brave enough to put abundant life to work no matter where they were, no matter how easy it became to just blend in and be average.

The next one-in-a-million could be you! This new women’s’ Bible study, created by Priscilla Shirer, will help you discover the deep, daily experience of God’s abiding presence and live the “above average” life experience by a rare few. The study begins Wednesday, September 28, and will meet each Wednesday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. A nursery will be provided. Contact Joyce Grisham to reserve your text.

MOPS RETURNS

Hawkins’s Mothers of Preschoolers will start meeting again on September 8th at 9:15am in the craft room. (across from the kitchen) Our theme this year is MomSense.
